Top 10 Food retailers in the Netherlands
The Dutch food retailer market is still dominated by giant Albert
Heijn (AH), but competitors Jumbo and Lidl are slowly but
surely winning ground. AH's exceptional growth in international
turnover from 32,800 billion euro in 2014 to 38,200 billion euro in
2015, can mainly be attributed to its strong presence in the USA
and the effects of the strong dollar. During the course of this
year AH will complete its merger with Belgian supermarket leader
Delhaize and as of mid 2016 the companies will operate under the
name Ahold Delhaize. Family-owned Jumbo has no international
presence, but constantly strives to grow in the Dutch market. In
January 2016 Jumbo annouced that it would take over bankrupt
Dutch restaurant chain La Place, including all assets, the service
organisation and the standalone branches. In 2015 discounter Lidl
opened its 400th outlet in the Netherlands. The German retailer
offers no A-brands and offers approximately 12000 items, far less
compared to AH and Jumbo. Nevertheless, its low prices, good
bakeries in many outlets, high quality products such as wine and
own brands make Lidl an attractive and hip retailer. This, together
with its lower rents for well-chosen locations, mostly outside citycentres,
makes Lidl a force to be reckoned with in the coming
years.
