Design Purpose: Use as decorative lighting in gardens
Physical Description: The head of the garden light is a cylinder 3 cm thick and 6 cm in diameter. The stake, which is stuck in the ground to support the head, should be removed before shipping just the head for use as a reading light.
For Use as a Reading Light: The head of the garden light can be used as a reading light by holding it in one hand or by suspending it by a string or other support.
Solar Panel: The solar panel is 4cm x 4cm, area 16 cm2
LED: The LED is a single LED
Battery: The battery is a AA Ni-Cd battery (1.2V, 350 mAh). This is the only component that needs to be changed. Since Cadmium is a toxic material, we need a Ni-MH AA battery instead of Ni-Cd.
Switch: There is no manual switch in the OSH model. When the solar panel is exposed to light, the LED is off, and it turns on automatically when no light falls on the solar panel.
Charging and Discharge Performance: Charging current in sunlight is varies with the sunlight intensity. It can be as high as 17.5mA, when the sunlight intensity is at 90,000 Lux, and it exceeds 10mA, even for less than ideal sunlight intensity. Discharge current with battery fully charged is about 11mA and drops slowly from there. The light can be used for reading even below 6mA, and charging all day in sunlight gives useful light for over 4 hours, sometimes all night long, if the charging sunlight is free of clouds all day.
Solar Panel Voltage: The voltage output by the solar panel is constant at about 3.0V, as long as the sunlight intensity exceeds 10,000 Lux.
Reliability: For use as a reading light, the garden light needs to work reliably daily for 3-4 hours and last for at least a year, preferably longer. The first choice would be garden lights that have been on the market with a reputation for reliability, rather than a new design that is put together for the first time. |
